Spain is in the middle of a large digital investment cycle. AI adoption in Spanish companies is rising fast from a low base. I have listed the figures that matter for an SME decision, along with the organisations that published them, so you can tell official statistics from market forecasts.

How many Spanish companies use AI
The official source is Spain’s statistics institute. According to INE’s survey on ICT use in companies, 21.1% of companies with 10 or more employees used artificial intelligence in the first quarter of 2025, up 8.7 points on the year before. Among companies with fewer than 10 employees the share was 13.4%.
For the EU as a whole, Eurostat reports that 20.0% of enterprises with 10 or more employees used AI in 2025, up from 13.5% in 2024, with the Nordic countries leading (Denmark 42.0%, Finland 37.8%, Sweden 35.0%).
The practical reading: roughly one Spanish company in five with ten or more staff uses AI in some form, and fewer among the smallest. Most of the market has not started, and those that have are mostly using general-purpose cloud tools.
Market size: a forecast, not a statistic
Market-research firms publish larger numbers. Mordor Intelligence, which sells industry reports, estimates Spain’s digital transformation market at USD 41.62 billion in 2025 and projects USD 110.23 billion by 2031, a compound annual growth rate of 17.63%. That is one firm’s projection for a broad category (all digital transformation, not only AI), and it should be read as a direction of travel rather than a measured fact.
Funding: what is open and what is closed
Public money helps, but it comes in windows:
- Kit Digital (Red.es) funded digitisation vouchers of EUR 2,000 to 29,000 by company size. The calls for beneficiaries have ended; the government’s February 2026 balance counts 858,000 grants and EUR 3,067 million committed (Plan de Recuperación).
- IVACE (Comunitat Valenciana) funds up to 45% of eligible costs for small companies through INNOVA-CV and DIGITALIZA-CV. The 2026 windows are closed; see our IVACE guide.
- ENISA participative loans and CDTI R&D projects accept applications all year.
Our Q4 2026 grants table lists the amounts and status of each line with links to the official pages, and the Kit Digital guide explains how that programme worked.
Keeping client data in the building
Data protection is part of the decision too. According to DLA Piper’s January 2026 GDPR survey, European supervisory authorities have imposed EUR 7.1 billion in GDPR fines since May 2018, about EUR 1.2 billion of it in 2025, and received an average of 443 breach notifications a day.
This is where local AI deployment becomes a strategic choice rather than a technical preference. When your AI models run on hardware inside your office, client data does not cross a network boundary to a third-party provider, which makes GDPR compliance simpler to demonstrate. Our break-even guide covers the cost side of the decision.

Where to start: four steps
- Place yourself in the figures. Roughly one Spanish company in five with ten or more staff uses AI, fewer among the smallest. Note which group you are in and what you already use, cloud tools included.
- Pick one use case. One task, with a number you can record from day one (time spent, documents handled, errors caught).
- Check the funding that is open. ENISA and CDTI accept applications all year; Kit Digital and the 2026 IVACE windows are closed. The Q4 2026 grants table has the status of each line and the IVACE guide the regional calls.
- Run it on hardware you own and compare costs. Client data stays inside your office, and the break-even guide tells you when the machine pays for itself against cloud tokens.
